There are many cloud backup services with a dizzying array of features and pricing. The best known are Carbonite and Mozy (and Mozy Pro).
However, we like the features and restore capabilities of Jungle Disk and SOS Online Backup. Here are some of their key benefits:
- Jungle Disk is low-cost and typically better-priced than its competitors.
- Jungle Disk offers access to your backed-up data as a computer drive. If you’re in Windows, for example, it installs as a “J” Drive. You simply need to click on the drive and will get access to your data.
- SOS Online Backup’s biggest advantage is that it maintains infinite versions of your data. There is no extra charge for those versions. Most services will maintain 2-4 weeks of versions of your data.
Full disclosure: when clients want us to manage cloud backup for them, we use Jungle Disk so that we can have access to the highly reliable Rackspace servers the service offers.
Security services such as Norton, McAfee, and Avast offer cloud backup and do a decent job of it. However, cloud backup is an add-on service for them. Since backup is not their core offering, we have concerns about counting on them being available in the long term.
