Happy New Year to everyone in the Bergen IT community.

As we mentioned a few weeks ago, tablets and mobile devices were poised to be the big holiday gift. And indeed, the evidence is now out and clear: 2013 is going to be the year when mobile devices change the computing landscape.

Big Numbers

Christmas Day alone, 17.4 million iOS and Android devices were activated. In the week between Christmas and New Year’s over 50 million smartphones and tablets were activated.

Even more amazing, 1.76 billion apps were downloaded during that time.

For all the bubbly that Apple and Android-based companies like Google and Samsung were popping on New Year’s Eve, it was a less-happy holiday season for e-reader sellers like Barnes & Noble and Amazon. It’s estimated that shipments of e-readers fell by 36 percent in 2012. Laptop computer makers like Dell are also feeling the squeeze heading into 2013.

The shift towards tablets and smart phones isn’t suprising. People are excited at the multi-functionality of the tablet. They like the flexibility of smaller, but-still-powerful, devices. And the amazing functionality that can sit in the palm of your hand means mobile devices can work great for family use, and still be serious business tools at the same time.

Going Mobile Means New Possibilities & New Challenges

So saying, with the increasing availability of tablets and smart phones come challenges.

For example, how can you leverage the extensive capabilities of the tablet and phone to work for the specific needs of your business or your home? Certainly playing Words with Friends on the go is fun, but now you can generate credit card sales while standing next to your customer’s desk.

If your company has a website that’s a few years old you may discover that it doesn’t display properly on a mobile device. People will be looking at your digital presence on a range of devices and through a variety of browsers. Your business needs to look professional when seen from a phone, a tablet, or a laptop.
