When did you last check to see if your home technology is secure?

Be sure to change the default username and password the comes with the router.

The reality is that most people don’t know whether or not they have good tech security for their home office, or for their family tech equipment.

They need to find out, because the risks of being un- or under-protected are real. Hackers are able to take advantage of technology security weakness.

Your router is part of the bedrock of any home office or home entertainment technology. So, it’s essential to ensure that strong tech security for your router is in place. Here are five tips to keep in mind:

1) Change Your Router Username & Password

Every router comes with a predetermined username and password. Don’t let it stay that way. The default login should be switched to a custom password as soon as possible.

2) Change the Wi-Fi Network Name

Your Wi-Fi network probably has a name provided by your Wi-Fi provider, or the router manufacturer. If this name is not changed, cyber-attackers can determine the type of router you have – and use that information to their advantage.

3) Change the Wi-Fi Network Password

Stay better protected by changing your network password periodically. This provides another obstacle for hackers, and eliminates easy access.

4) Don’t Broadcast Your Wi-Fi Network Name

Most Wi-Fi networks broadcast their names. Increase your security by blocking scanning using your router settings.

5) Enable Your Router Firewall

A router firewall acts as a filter for data. It lets safe bits of information through but blocks unauthorized access. Make sure that the firewall built into your router is enabled.
